Online summer school for choral composers | June 29 – July 3, 2020

Aim group: professional composers who wish to work with the choir, students of composition departments not younger than 16 years old, choirmasters writing for the choir

Organizers: 

  • Interregional Conductors Association of Children and Youth Choirs of North-West of Russia 
  • House of folk art of the Committee on Culture of the Leningrad region

In cooperation with: Composers Union of Russia and Composers Union of St Petersburg

During the five days of summer school composers work on a new piece for choir under supervision of the one of our three teachers. Most of the time composers work on individually with their working group leader or on their own. There also will be several group lectures and one final presentation of the new pieces to the conductors from summer school for choirmasters which is held on the same dates.

All the participants of the summer school for composers will be assigned to the following working groups according to their desire and the availability of spots in the groups (it is possible to participate in several groups if there are spots):

  • Composer in 21st century and folklore (held by Alexey Larin)
  • Choral music for children and juniors. Combining traditional and modern choral techniques (held by Mia Makaroff)
  • Modern composing techniques (held by Jēkabs Jančevskis)

Group leaders are:

  • Alexey Larin (Russia), Honored Art Worker of Russian Federation, professor of Russian Gnesin Academy of Music, honored professor of Korea University in Seoul. Laureate and Jury member of all-Russian and international composers’ contests. Board member of Composers Union of Moscow.
  • Mia Makaroff (Finland), composer, arranger, music teacher and a choir leader, workshops leader in Finland and abroad. Her music is actively performed by children, youth and adult choirs all over the world. Mia cooperates with singing groups ‘Rajaton’ (Finland) and ‘King’s Singers’ (Great Britain)
  • Jēkabs Jančevskis (Latvia), composer, choirmaster and singer, head of ‘Jūti’ singing group, conductor of ‘Sōla’ and ‘Anima’ choirs, writes music for ‘Latvia State Choir’ conducted by Maris Sirmais and ‘Sōla’ conducted by Kaspars Adamson.

Schedule will be unique for each participant of the summer school and will be discussed individually. Working hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. MSC. (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET)

Application deadline: June 24, 2020

School language: English (groups of Mia Makaroff and Jēkabs Jančevskis) or Russian with a translator to English (group of Alexey Larin)

Registration fee: 80 euro per person
